Kratky vs Deep Water Culture for Strawberries: Which Is Easier?

Apr 8, 2025 | Growing Kratky Strawberries

Kratky is easier to build and run. Deep water culture, usually shortened to DWC, is more forgiving once it is running and can carry bigger plants. Which one suits you depends on whether you would rather check a water level or maintain a pump.

How They Differ

Both grow a plant in a net cup over a container of nutrient solution. The difference is oxygen. In DWC an air pump pushes bubbles through an air stone, so the container can stay full. In Kratky there is no pump, and the roots get oxygen from the air gap that opens as the level falls.

Side by Side

  • Cost: Kratky needs only a container, net cups, medium and nutrients. DWC adds a pump, tubing and an air stone.
  • Power: Kratky uses none. DWC needs an outlet and stops working in a power cut.
  • Noise: Kratky is silent. Air pumps hum.
  • Attention: Kratky needs you to watch the level and keep an air gap. DWC needs the pump checked and the air stone cleaned.
  • Oxygen: DWC keeps roots better supplied, especially in warm rooms.

What It Means for Strawberries

Strawberries live for months and drink heavily when fruiting, which pushes Kratky harder than a quick crop like lettuce does. You will top up more often and check pH more often than a DWC grower would. In return you get a system with nothing to break and nothing to plug in.

Which to Choose

Choose Kratky for a first container, a windowsill, a balcony without power or a project with children. Consider DWC if your growing space runs hot or you want to grow many plants in one large reservoir. Plenty of growers start with Kratky and add a pump later, since the container and net cups are the same.
