The Essentials

  • Container with a lid: opaque, and at least a gallon of volume for each plant.
  • Net cups: 3 inch cups suit strawberry crowns.
  • Growing medium: clay pebbles hold the plant upright in the cup and can be washed and reused. Starter cubes are useful for young plants.
  • Hydroponic nutrients: a complete formula made for water culture.
  • pH test kit or meter, with pH up and pH down.
  • Strawberry plants: bare-root crowns or plugs of a day-neutral or everbearing variety.

Useful Extras

  • EC meter: measures nutrient strength, which takes the guesswork out of topping up.
  • Full-spectrum LED grow light and timer: needed if you are growing away from a sunny window.
  • Small soft brush: for hand-pollinating flowers indoors.
  • Light-blocking jar covers or sleeves: if you grow in glass jars.
