Welcome to Kratky Strawberries

Nov 9, 2024 | Growing Kratky Strawberries

Welcome to Kratky Strawberries, a website about one thing: growing strawberries with the Kratky method of hydroponics.

What the Kratky Method Is

The Kratky method is the simplest form of hydroponics. A plant sits in a net cup above a container of nutrient solution. As the roots take up the solution, the level drops and leaves a pocket of air that keeps the roots supplied with oxygen. There is no pump, no air stone and no electricity, which makes it a good fit for a windowsill, a balcony or a kitchen counter.

Why Strawberries

Most Kratky guides stop at lettuce and herbs. Strawberries are harder. The plants live for months instead of weeks, they carry fruit, and indoors they need help with pollination. That extra difficulty is why they deserve a site of their own, and it is what we grow and write about here.

What You Will Find Here

  • Which strawberry varieties suit a Kratky container, and which do not.
  • How to choose a container, net cups and a growing medium.
  • How to mix a nutrient solution and keep the pH in range.
  • How much light the plants need, and how to pollinate flowers by hand.
  • What to do about yellow leaves, brown roots, algae and mold.

Who This Site Is For

Anyone who wants to try it: first-time growers, people with no garden, hydroponic hobbyists adding a fruiting crop, and families or teachers looking for a growing project.
